ChatGPT to Anki: Turn Conversations into Flashcards (2026)
You just had a great study session with ChatGPT — definitions, examples, the lot. Here's how to get it into Anki before it disappears into your chat history.
Updated August 2026 · works with ChatGPT (chatgpt.com), Claude (claude.ai), and Gemini (gemini.google.com).
Option 1 — The prompt method (free, manual)
ChatGPT can format its own knowledge as importable cards if you ask precisely. Paste this at the end of a study conversation:
Turn the key points of this conversation into flashcards. Output ONLY CSV, no commentary, one card per line: "question","answer" Keep questions specific and answers under 30 words. Escape any quotes inside fields.
Save the output as a .csv file, then in Anki: File → Import, map field 1 to Front and field 2 to Back, pick a deck, import.
Where it hurts: very long conversations can hit the reply's output limit so cards get cut off, bad quoting can split fields in the wrong place (check Anki's import preview), and you repeat the dance for every chat.
Option 2 — One click on any conversation
- Install the free extension. AI Chat to Flashcards adds a button to Chrome. Conversation content is processed in your browser and not uploaded by the extension.
- Open the conversation — today's, or one from weeks ago.
- Click the icon and download an Anki-compatible CSV, or copy tab-separated text for Quizlet. No prompting, no CSV wrangling by hand.
Which should you use?
- One-off, short chat → the prompt method is fine.
- Studying regularly with AI → the extension removes the cleanup step — a conversation becomes an importable card file in a click.
- Old conversations → open the chat and click; no need to re-prompt inside it.
Every AI chat, one click from being a deck.

Can ChatGPT make Anki cards directly?
It can write question-answer pairs as CSV text if you prompt it well, but this manual route doesn't add cards into Anki automatically — you import the CSV yourself, and very long chats may need more than one pass.
How do I import CSV flashcards into Anki?
File → Import, choose your .csv or .txt, map field 1 to Front and field 2 to Back, pick a deck, import.
What does the extension add over a prompt?
One click on an open ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini conversation produces an Anki-compatible CSV (or Quizlet-ready text) — no prompting or hand-cleaning, and it works on chats from weeks ago.
